This course is essential for anyone working in the Adventure Tourism industry as it introduces the principles and skills needed to investigate the relationship between tourism activity and conservation issues. Special attention is given to the impact of adventure tourism in natural settings and developing a perspective on the ethical issues related to environmental stewardship, through examination of sustainable tourism practices, with examples from local tourism.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • To define and understand relevant concepts such as stewardship, environmental ethics, sustainable tourism and biodiversity
  • To create a practical stewardship plan for a company, agency or activity
  • To gain an appreciation of the complex issues often related to implementing a stewardship plan
  • To understand the impacts of tourism on natural resources and local communities and strategies for minimizing those impacts
  • To describe specific techniques and practices available for adventure tourism and other tourism operators for achieving sustainable tourism
  • To describe why environmental ethics and environmental stewardship are significant concerns for the tourism industry
