This course is essential for anyone working in the Adventure Tourism industry as it introduces the principles and skills needed to conduct quality Interpretation Programs with specific emphasis on sensitivity towards Cross-Cultural Interpretation.

Through the application of interpretation principles to British Columbia's coastal heritage, and through a variety of in-class and in-the-field experiences, a general cultural and natural history knowledge base will be developed.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

  • To illustrate through relevant examples the principles of interpretation and apply them to the adventure and eco- tourism industry
  • To emphasize the need for interpreters to act as guides or assistant guides and the need to employ professional guiding principles, ethics and current occupational standards for interpretation in such areas as environmental sensitivity, safety, first aid response and group management
  • To reinforce the need to incorporate sound safety preparedness in all programs
  • To assist students in gaining a general knowledge of British Columbia's coastal natural and cultural heritage that would be relevant to the adventure and ecotourism industry
  • To show the importance of communicating with sensitivity about other cultures and to other cultures
  • To enhance public speaking confidence through in-class participation and in-class and in-field presentations
  • To communicate the importance and usefulness of interpretive techniques versus more conventional instructional techniques in communicating to people.
  • To show that people learn through a variety of ways and demonstrate the benefits of non-verbal, interactive, multi-sensual approaches.
  • To have students demonstrate they understand the principles of interpretation
  • To show students how to research, plan, design and deliver professional, effective interpretation programs.
  • To teach students how to evaluate an interpretive program

* if this course is taken in conjunction with the Environmental Stewardship course, the joint fee for both classes is $550
